vocalist and musician. His melodies soar and the lyrics are poetry.
James Lee Stanley, the true renaissance man, was born into a musical family in
Philadelphia, PA, and already performing and recording for LeGrand Records by
the time he was fourteen. He majored in music at Cal State University, and did
a stint in the Air Force as a chinese linguist. Even early in his career, he
was performing three hundred dates a year with artists as diverse as Bill Cosby,
Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams and Spyro Gyra. Seven studio albums preceded his LIVE album,
which was nominated for a Grammy and landed him a job as opener for comedian
Steven Wright for the next three years. His Simpatico album
was nominated for a Grammy, and was considered by many critics to be a Latin
American equivalent of Paul Simon's Graceland.
James has recorded 18 albums so far, as well as producing Peter Tork of the Monkees
first solo CD, recording and producing two duet CD's with he and Peter Tork entitled Two
Man Band and Once Again; Mike Pinder
of the Moody Blues; and Pamela Stanley (for whom he wrote the Classic Dance Hit, "Coming
Out of Hiding"). Cartoonist Cathy Guisewite chose him to score
three Emmy award-winning CBS-TV Cathy specials and
the recent Cathy the Musical. Jamed scored the Cable
Award Winning Tom Parks Special and has recently collaborated
with songwriter Michael Smith (author of The Dutchman).
He also scored the film Even Cowgirls Get the Blues,
whose author, Tom Robbins, called him "probably the last great undiscovered
singer-songwriter in America." He even appeared as a regular for five seasons
on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, once even as the Singing
It is only a long lived singer-songwriter career that lets James Lee Stanley
unite the unpredictable creativity and the eclectic elements that make up his
world. His remarkable ability as a vocalist and composer allow him to create
songs, each recorded with a finely crafted backing that sonically enhance the
impulse behind the lyric, coupled with his outragously hilarious repartee. He
is one of the few all time greats and undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters.
Fi Magazine listed his Freelance Human Being, as one
of the finest recordings of 1998 and it was ranked as one of the Top 200 Recordings
of all time by March 1999.
